LONDON: Hosting the 2022 World Cup in Qatar in winter, when the weather is considerably more mild, will be wonderful, said Holland coach Louis van Gaal (pictured).
Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Van Gaal expressed surprise at FIFA’s original decision to stage a summer event in Qatar in 2022.
“Twenty years ago, I expressed my positive views about the World Cup being played in the winter instead of the summer,” he said.
“Players who are involved in tiring seasons would be so much fitter and fresher for a winter World Cup, the biggest football tournament in the world. Qatar 2022 in winter is England’s best chance of winning a World Cup, 56 years after the Three Lions lifted the World Cup for the one and only time,” said Louis van Gaal.
“When I was coach of Bayern Munich I always took the team to Qatar in January. Fantastic weather, great conditions to train and play. Temperatures between 22 and 26 degrees. You can’t get it any better. And the accommodations and set-ups are all perfect,” he said. QNA
