DOHA: The Qatar Sustainability Network (QSN) was officially launched here yesterday, that aims to collectively enhance the culture of research, science, and sustainability through active public engagement.

As a contribution to Qatar’s National Vision 2030 and the Qatar National Research Strategy, QSN will promote collaborations among the research and academic community, as well as NGOs to become a leader in sustainable development and research. The network aims to inspire, inform, empower, and educate to improve the quality of life for future generations in Qatar. QSN aims to become an active platform for the advancement of the science-based sustainability agenda in Qatar and beyond.

During the forthcoming climate change conference in Doha (COP18), QSN will be the focal point for Arab non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and it will actively lobby and give advice on the global climate change debate.

Dr Rabi Mohtar, director of the Qatar Environment and Energy Research Institute (QEERI)  said: “This new initiative highlights the importance of conservation and sustainability in Qatar.”

To further improve an understanding of environmental and energy-related issues, QSN will foster science-based knowledge to develop better policy-making, increase awareness through education programs, publish white papers and engage in community-based programs.
