DOHA: Three Qatari female ambassadors from Maersk Oil Qatar (MOQ), the country’s largest offshore oil producer, have attended the 6th One Young World Summit held in Bangkok from November 18 to 21.
The international event brings together young talent and FTSE 100 and Fortune 500 companies to debate the most pressing issues of our time and set up initiatives to drive positive change.
Maersk Group sent 15 delegates to this year’s summit, further supporting its efforts to shape the next generation of global leaders. The representatives from four of the 130 countries in which Maersk Group operates have each has demonstrated their ability to act as change ambassadors. The delegation is MOQ’s first, and it marks the company’s progress and commitment to building local capacity, offering unique opportunities for Qatari nationals to develop both as individuals and leaders.
The MOQ delegates, Asma Aboubakr Ahmad, Alanoud Nasser Heedan and Sara Al Maraghi, are all members of MOQ’s Qatari Leadership Talent Pool, a programme which identifies and accelerates the development of high-performing Qatari employees, to go on to assume leadership positions. The trio went through a rigorous application process to earn a place to represent MOQ and Qatar in Bangkok.
One Young World is a UK-based not-for-profit that gathers the brightest young people from around the world, empowering them to make lasting connections and implement positive change. One Young World Counsellors, who lend their support to raising awareness of issues affecting young people today are some of the world’s most recognisable entrepreneurs and mentors, including: Kofi Annan, Chair of the Kofi Annan Foundation and the 7th Secretary General of the UN and Sir Richard Branson, Founder of Virgin Group.

Sara Al Maraghi, Piping Engineer at MOQ, said: “I am honoured to represent both Maersk Oil Qatar and my country as an ambassador at the One Young World Summit. The Summit was a great opportunity to meet with my global peers and to be part of discussions that give me a chance to talk proudly about the achievements of my company and my country.”
Also attending from Maersk was Michele Cardoso Perera Schifino, Communications Specialist, APM Terminals in Brazil speaking in the plenary session on migrant rights.
She will also speak at ‘Call on COP21’, a parallel event focused on sustainable development, during which young leaders from every country will deliver a speech addressing their respective heads of government to persuade them to take action on minimising the effects of climate change during the UN Conference of the Parties (COP) in Paris.
She will be joined by Guangtong Liu, Project Manager, Maersk Group Procurement, China and Muhammad Imran Saleem, Trade and Marketing Manager, Maersk Line Pakistan.
During the summit, the Maersk Oil delegates highlighted the company’s success in reducing gas flaring from the Al Shaheen field by over 90 percent since 2007 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions during the same period by around 50 percent — a significant accomplishment.
