ANKARA: France and Denmark have advanced to the World Cup Round of 16 after the third and final matches in Group C.

Already eliminated Peru have defeated Australia 2-0 to crush Socceroos' dreams to advance to the second round.

The fans at Fisht Stadium in Sochi saw the opening goal from Peru in the 18th minute, a well-executed half-volley by Andre Carrillo.

South American representatives' captain Paolo Guerrero scored Peru's second goal five minutes after half-time.

He became the third oldest South American player to ever score in the World Cup. Uruguay’s Obdulio Jacinto Varela (36y 279d) and Argentina’s Martin Palermo (36y 227d) are the two oldest ever.

In the other Group C match, France and Denmark drew goalless at Luzhniki Stadium Moscow.

Denmark, in a possible Australia victory, needed a point to be sure about advancing to Round of 16, and they did just that.

The goalless draw was the first in this year's World Cup, no other match finished 0-0 before.
