DOHA: About 11,000 students are currently enrolled in Qatar’s parallel education system and their number is expected to grow up to 12,000 during this academic year.

The Supreme Education Council (SEC) runs nine evening schools targeting people who are not enrolled in regular schools. Evening schools are meant for Qataris and GCC citizens who have crossed the “compulsory education” age.

The parallel system also allows students to pursue studies from their homes. They can appear for the examinations at the evening schools.

These schools are divided into primary, middle and secondary levels. The old government school curriculum is followed in the primary levels, while the new standard curriculum of the SEC has been taught in grades 5 to 11.

Grades 12 is also  using the old curriculum but from next year, the new curriculum will be implemented in the  senior secondary level, Al Sharq reported yesterday.

Admission to the evening schools will continue until the end of this month.

These schools are following the same evaluation system of the SEC and the teachers must be trained and well qualified. The evening schools function from 4pm to 8.30pm. Free transport is provided to the students from their home to the schools located in different parts of the country.
