Doha: The Doha-based Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions (ANNHRI) yesterday announced that its annual international conference is due to be held in Cairo on Saturday.
In a statement yesterday ANNHRI said that the conference will be on the sidelines of its twentieth general assembly, with the participation of 330 people representing 65 regional and international organisations and national institutions, including representatives of governments, civil society organisations and activists in addition to experts and consultants.
ANNHRI Secretary-General Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali, said that since the adoption of the Paris Principles in 1993 and the establishment of national institutions in accordance with them, many countries have established national institutions in compliance with the decision of the United Nations General Assembly. Thanks to the broad mandate given by the Paris Principles to national institutions for the protection and promotion of human rights, national institutions have gained a privileged and effective position within the national and international human rights system, he said.
Al Jamali said that the conference will discuss best practices, lessons learned, and current challenges facing each of the national human rights institutions, the Global Alliance and the Accreditation Sub-Committee, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and governments. It will also discuss the needs and priorities of each of them.
The conference will also touch on the criteria for accreditation of national human rights institutions, recommendations of the accreditation committee, strengthening partnership between national human rights institutions and their countries, international mechanisms, the Office of the High Commissioner and the Global Alliance.
