ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique met National Accountability Bureau chief Qamar Zaman Chaudhry yesterday to seek early disposal of corruption cases of Pakistan Railways.
The minister requested the NAB chairman to expedite investigation into corruption cases in his ministry so that they could be turned into references and could be tried in courts. He also requested reinvestigation into some cases.
`The chairman asked railways authorities to detail focal persons for different corruption cases in Pakistan Railways to help NAB get relevant record in time,` said NAB`s spokesman Ramzan Sajid.
He said that NAB chairman and the minister agreed to work in close collaboration for early disposal of corruption cases being investigated by the bureau.
The minister was accompanied by secretary of railways and other senior officers of the Pakistan Railways. Senior NAB officers were also present during the meeting to assist the chairman.
Chaudhry was quoted as saying: `NAB will play a proactive role to strengthen regulators and support individual organisations in their efforts to eradicate corruption from the country.
He directed senior NAB officers to actively pursue all cases to take them to their logical end and focus on recovery of losses to the national exchequer along with action against the accused.
On the occasion, the railways minister held out an assurance that he would continue to assist NAB in the war against corruption to eradicate this menace from the PR.
The minister requested reinvestigation into some PR cases, including the biggest and controversial land deal of 141 acres of land struck during former President Gen Pervez Musharraf`s regime in 2001 for establishing Royal Palm Golf and Country Club in Lahore, the sale of scrap worth millions of rupees at throwaway price and purchase of different items for 69 locomotives.
