RIYADH: Saudi authorities beheaded yesterday a Pakistani man convicted of smuggling drugs to the ultra-conservative Muslim kingdom, the interior ministry said.
The man was found guilty of attempting to smuggle an undisclosed amount of heroin that he had swallowed, the ministry said in a statement carried by SPA state news agency.
His beheading in the eastern city of Dammam brings to 72 the number of executions carried out in Saudi Arabia this year.
$34m US aid for power sector
ISLAMABAD: In a bid to curtail Pakistan’s energy sector woes, the United States has committed $20m for the much-awaited Diamer-Bhasha dam and an additional $14m for the rolling out of smart meters to detect theft worth billions of rupees.
In a written reply regarding Washington’s financial commitment to the Diamer-Bhasha dam project, the spokesperson of US Embassy said yesterday that the US government has thus far committed $20.5m for the Diamer-Bhasha dam.
Less dollars for foreign travel
KARACHI: While millions of dollars are taken away by the big guns, there is a serious move to stop ordinary citizens from taking more than $3,000 per person while proceeding abroad and not more than $25,000 in a year.
There is also a proposal not to allow any foreign currency amount for children under 15 years of age.
The Pakistan Customs has suggested to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) to amend the regulations on taking out foreign currency abroad by a person and has advised to reduce it to $3,000 or cap an amount of $25,000 per annum to a person.
Scientist listed on US journal
ISLAMABAD: A leading American science magazine has listed a technology by a Pakistani scientist in its ‘World Changing Idea’ list- the magazine’s annual feature for the recognition of the world’s top ten technologies that have potential to change the world.
On November 19, Scientific American - a reputable science journal based in the United States (US) - recognised Muhammad Hamid Zaman, a Pakistani biomedical engineer, for his innovative product Pharmacheck, which was chosen by the magazine as one of the world’s top 10 technologies for its December, 2013 issue.
