Doha: Qatar National Broadband Network has connected 3,500 homes in Qatar through its fibre optic network and these homes are getting services through Vodofone network.
“We have already reached to four municipalities which are Doha, Al Khor, Al Wakra and Al Daayen and in future we will cover other three municipalities,” Mohamed Al Yafei, Business Development Manager of Qnbn, told The Peninsula.
Qnbn is an independent company wholly owned by the government, with the mandate to enable accessible high speed communications through a cutting edge fiber optic broadband infrastructure. In line with the Qatar ICT Strategy 2015, Qnbn is building a network that provides open and equal access to service providers to ensure faster, next generation internet services, whilst providing end-users with a choice of service providers.
According to officials Qnbn has connected 22 homes but they do not have actual connections.
“Qnbn’s fiber optic broadband infrastructure empowers citizens and businesses across the nation. It does so by enabling the delivery the internet speeds people require to succeed at work, enjoy the capabilities of the internet at home, education, healthcare, and experience more efficient and responsive public services in their everyday life,” said Mohamed Al Yafei.
Fiber optic cable is the next-generation alternative to copper wire networks and is up to 10 times faster than conventional broadband. It will transform the community and enterprise by bringing with it enhanced services, multi-media entertainment at faster download speeds, cost savings, more choice, increased competitiveness and improved sustainability.
Fiber networks, which are capable of providing near-limitless capacity, offer the most future-proof approach to meeting broadband demand over the long term. The overall benefits of fiber optic broadband infrastructure are the improvements to internet access making it faster, better and clearer.
Qnbn has signed agreements with service providers — Ooredoo and Vodafone. It will lease its passive fiber optic broadband infrastructure for service providers so that they offer their broadband services to end users.
