British PM to visit Pakistan

Islamabad: British Prime Minister David Cameron will arrive in Islamabad today on a two-day official visit. He is scheduled to meet President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for talks on means of promoting bilateral ties and issues of mutual concern. 

Three killed in Karachi firing

Islamabad: Three people were killed and six wounded in shooting in Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, police said yesterday, adding unidentified gunmen on motorcycles opened fire in Kharadar. The wounded were taken to hospital, police said, adding the city was tense after the incident. 

Sharif refuses to fund scribes

ISLAMABAD: The government has decided in principle not to bear expenses of journalists in the private sector accompanying the prime minister on his foreign trips. The Prime Minister’s Office has asked the ministries of information and foreign affairs to inform media houses that if they are interested in the coverage of the premier’s visit to China from July 4, they can do it at their expense. An official said that the government would deal with visas, accreditation cards, travel and lodging.

Rice production drops by 20pc 

KARACHI: Pakistan’s rice production has declined by around 20 percent in the past five years ending June 30 to 5.54m tonnes, Agri Forum of Pakistan said yesterday. “Production during Pakistan People’s Party government declined by 20 percent,” Ibrahim Mughal, Chairman of the forum, said. “Lower production caused a significant decline in exports of the grain amid increased trade deficit.” The country produced 2.96m tonnes in 2008-09. 

Peshawar on high alert  

Islamabad: Authorities tightened security around religious places across Peshawar, the capital of the northwestern province of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa to avert possibe attacks during Friday prayers, police said. Additional forces were deployed and many streets closed. A suicide bomber attacked a mosque last Friday, killing 40 people.
