DOHA: The Minister of State for Defence yesterday unveiled details of a proposal for national service at the first weekly meeting of the State Cabinet after it was formed in June.
The proposal concerned a draft law to put national service in place, Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported, without giving details.
The Cabinet will discuss the draft legislation at its next meeting.
The Cabinet approved a draft law which, once enforced, would see a police academy set up that would be purely Qatari.
“The fact that the draft law has been prepared reflects the government’s keenness to establish a purely Qatari police academy that would help maintain the heritage of the ancestors and care for local traditions and customs, taking into account Qatar’s legal approach,” QNA said.
The Cabinet also approved a decision of the Minister of Environment banning the use of fishing nets to catch the popular king fish between August 15 and October 15 every year.
This was a regular weekly meeting of the Council of Ministers following the summer break.
The Prime Minister and Interior Minister H E Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani chaired the session at the Emiri Diwan.
Following the meeting, the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs H E Ahmed bin Abdullah Al Mahmoud gave details, according to QNA.
The Cabinet also took up several other issues on its agenda.
It decided to take measures on Advisory Council’s recommendations to amend some provisions of law Number 7 of 2007 concerning settlement in administrative disputes.
A draft law amending some provisions of law Number 14 of 1999 on weapons and ammunitions was also approved.
The Cabinet endorsed a draft decision of the Minister of Environment organising the practice of fishing at sea.
The draft decision prohibits the use of certain types of fishing nets and sea fishing methods.
A draft decision of the Minister of Environment endorsing national and Gulf specifications as Qatari standard specifications was also approved.
The ministerial decision includes some major Gulf-based specifications as Qatari standards and specifications applicable to electrical appliances, chemicals, textile, mechanical goods, vehicles and tyres, electronics, measurements and calibrations, food, construction and building materials, and oil and gas.
