Mowasalat CEO, Khalid Al Hail (centre), addressing the press conference yesterday.

DOHA: Mowasalat is planning to set up a unified call centre for all taxis in Qatar.

Currently there is a separate call centre each for the Karwa taxis and the cabs operated by two private companies — Al Million and Al Ijarah Holding.

Mowasalat has recently invited a bid to select three new companies to run taxis on a franchise basis.

All these operators will be eventually served by a unified call centre, which is expected to be ready next year, it was disclosed yesterday.

“The unified call centre will primarily serve taxi operations to better serve the public by integrated pre-booking and automated dispatch solutions,” said a company statement.

Besides taxis, public buses and other modes of public transport in the country will also be connected to the unified call centre, at a later stage.

The proposed facility would provide easier and faster access for passengers to a taxi by giving more options.

“Through the unified call centre, we will be able to send the nearest available taxi, irrespective of the operator. Customers can definitely choose a specific operator, but they will have more options if a taxi operated by that company is not immediately available. Such a facility will also help reduce the operational cost of each company to a great extent,” said an official.

Al Million and Al Ijarah will continue to operate their own call centres until they are eventually connected to the unified call centre, once it becomes fully functional, he added.
