DOHA: Four Indians, from the southern state of Kerala, died yesterday in Al Shahaniya after they entered a manhole that was apparently connected to sanitary sewer lines.

The Indian Embassy confirmed the deaths and said the bodies were brought to the mortuary at Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) around 9pm yesterday.

The tragic incident reportedly took place last afternoon. “We are trying to get details of the incident,” an embassy official said.

Unconfirmed reports suggest the four were cleaning a septic tank in a labour camp when two of them entered the manhole that was connected to sewer lines.

When they didn’t come out the others went looking for them and all the four perished.

Community sources identified the four as Ishaq, 26, Faisal, 30, Muneer, 20 and Mohamed. Muneer landed here some six months ago and had been looking for a job.

Ishaq was from Kuttipuram in Malappuram district, while Faisal hailed from Calicut, Muneer from Varkala in Trivandrum. Mohamed was a resident of Kottakkal in Malappuram district.

Ishaq’s brother had won a contract for cleaning in at the labour camp and the four were involved in the job that proved fatal.

Mohamed was said to be a civic employee who came there and was helping the trio, community sources claimed. The Peninsula
