The State of Qatar has always worked to promote dialogue, negotiations and diplomatic solutions to disputes and conflicts around the world. The state’s foreign policy is based on the belief of global peace and sustainable development. Based on this belief, Qatar has been an active partner of the United Nations to promote peace and development around the world. It has also actively worked to mediate between opposing sides to ease and defuse conflicts and tensions, particularly in the Middle East, North Africa and Afghanistan.
Qatar’s most recent achievement in this regard is the successful mediation to conclude a prisoner swap deal between Iran and the United States. Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani on Tuesday received a phone call from US President H E Joe Biden, who thanked the Amir for Qatar’s role to reach the deal and release of Americans held in Iran.
Biden acknowledged Qatar’s effective and constructive role on the international stage. The Amir affirmed Qatar’s belief in dialogue as the only way of resolving disputes and establishing peace, as well as proceeding with the state’s efforts in mediation and dispute resolution, adding that Qatar’s commitment to its role as a reliable international mediator is not limited by regional borders, but goes far beyond to contribute to efforts to establish peace globally. The two leaders also discussed strategic ties between the two countries and aspects of supporting and strengthening them in a range of fields, in addition to sharing perspectives on developments in the region, along with regional and international developments of common concern.
Qatar has also voiced its support for the UN efforts for a lasting and agreed-upon political solution to the issue of Moroccan Sahara, within the framework of the political process supervised by the UN, and in a way that guarantees Morocco’s sovereignty. Speaking at a UN General Assembly committee, Qatar’s representative said Qatar renews its welcome of the autonomy initiative presented by Morocco, which represents an objective basis for any realistic and sustainable solution to this issue. He emphasised Qatar’s firm position on supporting the principle of ending colonialism and foreign occupation in all its forms and manifestations.
As H H the Amir said in his recent address to the UN General Assembly, “The path to resolve conflicts through peaceful means is a long and strenuous path, but it is less costly than wars, and our commitment to continue our efforts in facilitating and making peace is a firm commitment deeply rooted in the core of our foreign policy.”
