Qatar through its strategic partnership with the UN, it supports international peace and security initiatives, development and human rights, and plays its role in combating various challenges in the world.
It provides humanitarian aid for education, health and economic development initiatives around the world. The country is committed to working with the international community to realise the UN’s sustainable development goals and rapidly responds to humanitarian emergencies. The Fifth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries on March 17, 2022 had adopted The Doha Programme of Action for the Least Developed Countries, which covers the decade 2022–2031.
The Doha Programme of Action seeks to address unique challenges faced by the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) through renewed and enhanced commitments between the LDCs and their development partners, including governments, the private sector, and the civil society.
It outlines a transformative agenda to unlock the potential of LDCs by promoting sustainable development, fostering economic growth, and implementing measures to build resilience, such as developing a food stock mechanism to address food insecurity, and establishing a facility to support a sustainable graduation from the LDC the category.
As part of the $60m commitment announced by Qatar during the Fifth UN Conference on the Least Developed Countries, Qatar Fund for Development (QFFD) signed a $10m contribution agreement with the Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly. The contribution aims to support the office in monitoring and following up on the implementation of the Doha Programme of Action.
The QFFD and United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) have also signed a $7m agreement to provide critical support to Palestinian refugees in Syria. The agreement is part of Qatar’s commitment to humanitarian assistance and improving the living conditions of Palestinian refugees in line with the UNRWA’s 2024 emergency appeal.
The funding will be allocated for essential services, including education, healthcare, and cash assistance for Palestinian refugees affected by the ongoing conflict in Syria. Besides, Minister of State for International Cooperation H E Lolwah bint Rashid Al Khater announced Qatar’s additional $100m pledge as part of its response to the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip and as support for the UNRWA during a ministerial meeting in New York. She expressed Qatar’s pride in being among the first countries to sign the Statement of Shared Commitments on UNRWA in recognition of the agency’s crucial role in providing life-saving assistance to Palestinian refugees.
