ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s Federal Ombudsman Salman Faruqui has disposed of about 80,000 public complaints during his first five months in office ending in May before going abroad for treatment.
The report pertaining to unbelievable and unprecedented disposal of the cases based on public grievances was issued by his legal adviser Hafiz Ehsan Khokhar, Advocate, here at the head office of the ombudsman yesterday.
Salman Faruqui and Syed Anwer Mahmood were also present. Faruqui, while responding to media questions, said that he has been diagnosed with blood cancer in New York where he took his wife for emergency treatment of multiple ailments, including malignancy and acute heart trouble.
“We both have returned contrary to the medical advice right in the middle of our regular treatment for appearing before the Supreme Court that has summoned me,” he said. He made it clear that he relinquished the office in the Presidency in May last and said jokingly that now none was inviting him for a cup of tea there.
Faruqui, now looking very frail, has rendered tremendous services for special children, elimination of pedal-push rickshaws. The country-wide institutions on most modern lines for the disabled children were established during his stewardship way back in 80’s which are providing the good services to such people.
Faruqui said that he has introduced reforms in Ombudsman Office to establish a system for the sake of humanity. The Asian Ombudsman Organisation elected him early this year as their president simply after studying his reforms manual that has brought revolution in the system.
“I didn’t meet anyone for the office and even didn’t aspire for any such office,” he maintained. Hafiz Ehsan Khokhar said that the reformed system has given teeth to the Ombudsman Office as it can proceed against non-implementation of its verdicts under the contempt law.
