Blogger ends hunger strike

HANOI: A well-known Vietnamese blogger, jailed for 12 years for anti-state propaganda, has ended hunger strike after authorities agreed to investigate complaints about prison treatment, his son said yesterday. Nguyen Van Hai, a founding member of the banned “Free Journalists Club” and better known by his alias Dieu Cay, did not eat for 25 days to protest how he and other political prisoners were being treated, his son Nguyen Tri Dinh said. On July 27, authorities said his complaints would be looked into and Dieu Cay began eating, Dinh said, adding he had met his father on Friday.

Filipina held for  kidnappings 

MANILA: A Korean’s Filipina wife, accused of being part of a gang of Koreans kidnapping their countrymen, has been arrested, officials said yesterday. Madel Buhay-Kim, wife of Kim Jeong-seok, was allegedly involved in the kidnapping of Yun So-woong in San Juan City on May 1, 2012, Philippine National Police Director General Alan Purisima said yesterday. A warrant for the arrest of Buhay-Kim was issued on July 25 by Pasig City regional trial court Judge Myrna Verano. She was apprehended at her house in Bacoor, Cavite. Ilagan said the kidnappers took $7,500 and P777,000 and a P20,000 watch from Yun, who was released.

MP faces arrest over graft

MANILA: Authorities have issued a warrant for the arrest of re-elected Lanao del Norte second district Representative Abdullah Dimaporo who is facing charges of graft and malversation of public funds for his alleged involvement in ghost projects worth P5m. Associate Justice Roland Jurado, Chairman of the anti-graft court’s Fifth Division, also directed law enforcement agencies to take custody of former provincial agriculturist Isabelo Luna as well as  co-accused Felizardo Dragon, Evangeline Ontiveros, Rosalinda Bisenio, and Elmer Sayre. For the graft charge, Dimaporo and his co-accused may post P30,000 bail each. For malversation, the judge approved the Ombudsman’s recommendation that bail be denied.

Landslide kills two minors

ZAMBOANGA CITY: Two minors were killed and another was injured when a landslide hit a village in Zamboanga City, officials said yesterday. The landslide occurred in a slope of Limpapa Village at about 7.30am and swept three homes at the foot of the hill.
