ISLAMABAD: The 90-day old Nawaz Sharif government, faced with multiple problems, will opt for the most challenging task of decisively proceeding against the “identified” killers, extortionists, criminal gangs and mafias in Karachi when the federal cabinet holds a unique session in the Sindh capital today.
“The cabinet will take up the one-point agenda — how to curb the bloodshed with an iron hand and restore the writ of the state,” a senior official said.
The key stakeholders of Karachi unequivocally agree that the lawbreakers need to be dealt with force, showing no laxity or negligence that has been the hallmark of the policies of successive federal and provincial governments.
Verification of thumb imprints
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s the National Database and Registration Authority, Nadra, started yesterday verification of voters’ thumb impressions to address grievances relating to alleged electoral fraud. Besides detecting a fake vote the verification will also identify the person who committed the malpractice.
Nadra Chairman Tariq Malik said that so far orders had been received from election tribunals to verify thumb impressions of voters in two National Assembly and one Sindh Assembly constituency where a detailed inquiry was ordered.
33 schemes for education
ISLAMABAD: The government of Pakistan is aiming at execution of 33 new development schemes in the higher education sector to help realize the target of enhancing access of youth to higher education from the existing 10 to 15 percent in 2020.
According to a spokesman of the Higher Education Commission the schemes relate to provision of academic infrastructure lab and research equipment for faculty development.
