DOHA: The Ministry of Interior is gearing up to meet the heavy rush that is expected in traffic hotspots across the country with reopening of the schools next week.

All the schools in Qatar are scheduled to begin their new academic session on September 10.

The Traffic Department has urged people to leave their homes early to schools and offices and strictly follow the traffic guidelines at areas where road works are going on.

The Department will deploy 60 additional patrols at roads and roundabouts across the country that are expected to witness heavy traffic during peak hours. This is an addition to the patrolling team to be deployed by Lakhwiya (Internal Security Force) and Faza, the ministry said in a statement yesterday.

There will be more patrols in areas where the schools are located, at  highways and places where road maintenance works are taking place, it added.

The Department has urged motorists not to block the road in case they meet with minor accidents. They have been advised either to move their vehicles to the side of the road or reach a reconciliation with the other party and report the incident at the nearest Traffic Department branch.

People have also been advised to plan their trips in advance to avoid delays, mental stress and speeding.

The statement noted that many roads are undergoing maintenance works, as roundabouts are being converted to intersections.

The Department also said that it will resume its traffic awareness campaign targeting students soon after reopening of the schools.

The Civil Defence Department said that it is working hard to ensure that all the schools have the required safety measures such as fire alarms and fire exits.

The Department will conduct surprise visits to the schools to ensure their compliance with the safety and security requirements.
