DOHA: A private school has allegedly raised tuition fees by 40 percent in one ago.
The school has informed parents that the revised fee structure will come into force from the beginning of the new academic year, Al Sharq reported yesterday, quoting several aggrieved parents. The name of the school was not disclosed.
The school has claimed that it had been seeking approval from the Supreme Education Council (SEC) for the hike over the past three years and had finally got the nod.
Some parents said that they were shocked by the steep hike and that they were not given any satisfactory explanation.
They wondered how the SEC could give approval for such unreasonable hike.
It is unlikely that the school would announce the decision without an official approval from the SEC, they felt.
The SEC last year had put a 10 percent cap on fee hike.
Parents said that the 40 percent hike applies to all levels of the school — elementary, preparatory and secondary. The revised fee structure ranges between QR12,000 and QR22,000 per year for different levels.
Parents were also upset by the timing of the announcement since it is too close to the new academic year which begins in September.
Had it been announced earlier, they would have an opportunity to shift their wards to some other school, some parents said.
