Needlefish kills fisherman

ZAMBOANGA CITY: A man was killed when a needlefish flipped and pierced his throat shortly after midnight yesterday in this city. 

Jesus Guerrero, 63, died minutes after he pulled the fish from his neck. Guerrero, along with his son and brother, was fishing in the waters off Sitio Gapuh. The men were checking their hooks when a needlefish leapt out and hit the victim. 

22 inmates bolt jail in Bukidnon

MANILA: Some 22 inmates bolted  a city jail in Bukidnon last afternoon, the Philippine National Police reported.

PNP spokesperson Senior Supt Reuben Sindac, quoting Police Chief Inspector Surki Senenas of the Police Regional Office 10 Tactical Operations, said the jailbreak happened around 3.30 pm at the jail in Brgy Pinatilan, Valencia City.

Tracker teams managed to recapture one of the inmates, who yielded a shotgun and two getaway motorcycles.

Rebels turn to ugly tactics

MANILA: Communist rebels in the Philippines smeared a roadside bomb that injured seven soldiers with human faeces and snake venom, the military said yesterday.

The wounded soldiers tested positive for potentially deadly bacteria, said Lieutenant Victor Dado, medical officer at the military hospital where the men were taken for treatment following Tuesday’s attack near the town of Pantukan. “It will aggravate the effects of the landmines,” Dado said.

Australian escapes death

KUALA LUMPUR: An Australian truck driver was acquitted of drug trafficking by a Malaysian court yesterday, ending an 18-month ordeal in which he faced a mandatory death sentence if convicted. “I’m very surprised. It’s good news,” Dominic Bird said. He was arrested on March 1, 2012 for alleged possession of 167 grams of methamphetamine and charged with drug trafficking.
