DOHA: The Doha Youth Forum on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice will begin tomorrow with an aim to actively engage young people in discussions related to crime prevention and criminal justice.
The three-day forum will be held at Qatar National Convention Centre in advance of 13th UN Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice. The forum, which is the-first-of-its-kind in the Middle East, is host by Qatar Foundation (QF) in collaboration with the Organising Committee of the United Nations 13th Conference on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.
The forum is a unique initiative launched by Qatar to actively engage young people in discussions related to crime prevention and criminal justice, and familiarise them with the role and functions of the UN.
The forum aims to discuss issues faced by students in the region and the problems caused by crime and how to prevent it through concrete and practical solutions.
QF received 185 applications of which 123 have been accepted. This comprised of 46 males and 77 female students. Most of the applicants are between the ages of 16 and 26. Among the students selected to participate in the Forum, 31 students are from Qatar, 15 from India, 11 from Pakistan, nine from Egypt and seven from Jordan.
Jassim Mohamed A Telefat, Executive Director of Management, Department of Health, Safety, Security and Environment, QF, told a press conference yesterday that the forum is a unique initiative launched by the State of Qatar to actively engage young people in discussion related to crime prevention and criminal justice.
“The forum will help develop capability of young people and enable them to take future leadership and participants in the forum are from wide variety of culture and background and it will enrich the discussions,” he added.
Dimitri Vlassis (pictured), Chief of Corruption and Economic Crime Branch, UN Office on Drugs and Crime, stressed the importance of the congress as the first of its kind and an initiative from Qatar to involve the youth in topics related with the congress.
“It was a dream to create an event for the youth to shape the future. Now it has become a reality,” he added.
Quoting UN Secretary- General Ban Ki-moon, he said young people represent the future generation and it is they who should discuss the subjects to take the leadership of the future rectifying our mistakes.

H E Salah bin Ghanem bin Nasser Al Ali will open it in the presence of dignitaries such as Qatar’s UN Ambassador Sheikha Alya bint Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Naser Al Nasser, former representative of Qatar at UN and others.
