New Delhi: A court yesterday framed charges against AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal in a defamation case filed against him by BJP leader Nitin Gadkari. Gadkari, now a union minister, had filed the criminal defamation complaint against Kejriwal, saying he defamed him by including his name in the Aam Aadmi Party’s list of “India’s most corrupt”.
Metropolitan magistrate Gomati Manocha put Kejriwal on trial while framing charges against him under section 499 and 500 of IPC and posted the matter for August 2. The court’s order came after Kejriwal refused to withdraw his statement in which he had levelled corruption allegations against Gadkari. Earlier in the day, the court suggested both the leaders bury the hatchet and reach an amicable resolution in the case. During the hearing, Gadkari told the court that he was ready to resolve the issue if Kejriwal withdraws his statement. However, Kejriwal refused to withdraw his statement and allegations. Kejriwal did not plead guilty and sought a trial.
Goa Facebooker condemns Pune techie’s murder
Panaji: Goa Facebooker Devu Chodankar, the first Facebook user to be booked for posting allegedly controversial updates on the social network after the 2014 Lok Sabha election, has condemned Pune techie Mohsin Shaikh’s murder. A mob killed the techie on June 2 after morphed controversial photos of Shivaji Maharaj and deceased Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray went viral on Facebook.
“Words are not enough to condemn the murder of the techie in Pune. This is the same mentality which they wanted to see me in jail,” shipbuilding professional Devu Chodankar, 32, said in his Facebook update.
Chodankar was booked for uploading controversial comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar. Police plans to arrest him were foiled after civil society protests last week. Chodankar said the deadly attack on the techie, 28-year-old Mohsin Shaikh, by members of the Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS) earlier this week could be sign of things to come. Pune police have claimed Mohsin was in no way connected to the uploaded images.
