New York: Qatar has reiterated its solidarity with the Palestinian people and their struggle for liberation from Israeli aggression to regain their inalienable, legitimate rights.
In a statement delivered before the UN General Assembly at a meeting on the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, Ambassador Sheikha Alia Ahmed bin Saif Al Thani, Permanent Representative of Qatar to the United Nations, noted that the attack on the Gaza Strip exceeded all norms and principles, especially the targeting of civilians and civilian facilities.
The meeting was held at the request of the Arab Group of States at the United Nations.
Sheikha Alia said the Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip was a flagrant violation of the charter of the United Nations as well as a violation of international humanitarian law and the international law of human rights.
She stressed that such crimes amounted to war crimes and those responsible must be held accountable.
Sheikha Alia said that the unprecedented criminality that characterised the current aggression had made clear to the international community that what was happening in Gaza was state terrorism by Israel and assault with intent.
The clearest example of the targeting of civilians was the Israeli army bombing UNRWA schools that are being used as shelters for children, women and the elderly, the most recent case being the targeting of the UNRWA school in Rafah, she said. “This incident has led to international condemnation by countries worldwide and also expressed by the UN Secretary-General, that the targeting of school in Rafah is a criminal act and a heinous violation of ethics.”
She stressed need to stop the military aggression on the Gaza Strip and find a lasting solution to the humanitarian crisis in the Strip. She also stressed the need to lift the siege on the Gaza Strip, open border crossings and establish a commercial port there.
Sheikha Alia stressed the need to provide financial and humanitarian support to the Palestinian people.
