KARACHI: A law is on the anvil to protect famous Pakistani brands from counterfeiting in the international market.
The move has been designed to challenge counterfeiting of Pakistani brands by Indian traders in the Gulf market who sell these products with Indian names after removing the original packing.
The Trademark office of the Intellectual Property Organisation plans to issue Geographical Indication trademarks to prevent faking of famous products originating from a particular area.
Power firms’ unpaid bills up
LAHORE: The unpaid bills of both private and public power companies have soared to a staggering Rs156bn ($1.515bn) less than 10 weeks after the government paid their bills for the pre-June period. The sum includes the unpaid bills of private power producers amounting to Rs54bn.
The government paid Rs380bn to private power producers to clear their bills just before the end of last fiscal year while bills exceeding Rs135bn of the public sector companies were “adjusted” in July.
LICFF to screen over 100 films
LAHORE: The Lahore International Children’s Film Festival (LICFF) is gearing up for its fifth edition with the provincial government’s support to entertain, inspire and educate children in the city.
The festival is scheduled to begin on September 21. Over 100 films will be screened over six days at Alhamra Hall.
For the first time, the government is supporting the LICFF. “The government has shown interest in youth development. When it came to children, major initiatives focused only on improving enrolment at schools,” Shoaib Iqbal, the festival director, says.
