Doha, Qatar: In partnership with Yemen Red Crescent Society (YRCS), Qatar Red Crescent Society (QRCS) has launched a project to enhance livelihoods for vulnerable and displaced people, at a total cost of $416,344.

The project is aimed at improving the living conditions of 4,683 beneficiaries in Shabwah, Hadramaut, Al-Mahrah, Hajjah, and Sana’a.

It involves the provision of vocational training and production resources for the breadwinners of 669 families, to help them earn income in many professions such as tailoring, fishing, beekeeping, livestock herding, and maintenance of solar panels and smartphones.

During the inauguration of phase 1, Ali Al Kindi, Assistant Undersecretary for Shabwa Governorate, stated, “Today, we are distributing 111 sewing machines to poor families and persons with special needs in Ataq District. The beneficiaries had already received training in sewing and tailoring using these machines, for the benefit of their families. I would like to thank the government and people of Qatar for this support, which would make those in need live better”.

QRCS has recently completed a similar project for the benefit of 4,270 internally displaced people (IDPs), in coordination with the competent authorities in Aden, Lahij, and Abyan, at a cost of $278,600.

The last phase of the project involved providing 610 trainees with income-generating resources, as follows: 60 motorcycles, 100 solar panel maintenance toolkits, 100 mobile phone maintenance toolkits, 250 heads of sheep, 50 sewing machines, and 50 hairdressing toolkits.

The nine-year conflict in Yemen fueled a humanitarian crisis, destroyed livelihoods, and increased poverty and unemployment rates. Two-thirds of the country’s 29 million population live in poverty, with women being the worst affected group.
