Municipalities issue 550 building permits in July

Doha: The Planning and Statistics Authority (PSA) reported that the building permits issued by municipalities in the country reached 550 permits in July, down by 27 percent, compared to 755 permits registered in June 2022.

In a statement on Wednesday, the PSA said that most of the municipalities in the country recorded a remarkable decrease in the number of building permits during July 2022, most notably Al Shamal Municipality (69 percent), followed by Al Daayen Municipality (51 percent), Umm Slal (36 percent), and Al Khor. (30 percent), Al Rayyan (27 percent), Doha (16 percent), Al Wakrah (15 percent), and Al Sheehaniya (12 percent).

According to their geographical distribution, the municipality of Al Rayyan comes at the top of the municipalities where the number of building permits issued was 148 permits, i.e. 27 percent of the total issued permits, while the municipality of Al Doha came in second place with 138 permits, i.e. 25 percent, followed by Al Wakrah municipality of with 134 permits, i.e.24 percent, then municipality of Al Daayen with 61 permits, i.e.11 percent. The rest of the municipalities were as follows: Umm Slal 27 permits (5 percent), Al Khor 23 permits (4 percent), Al Sheehaniya 15 permits (3 percent), and finally Al Shammal 4 permits (1 percent).

Data indicates that the new building permits (residential and non-residential) constitute 46 percent (252 permits) of the total building permits issued during July 2022, while the percentage of additions permits constituted 51 percent (281 permits), and finally fencing permits with 3 percent (17 permits).

By analyzing new residential building permits data, we find that villas top the list, accounting for 62 percent (107 permits) of all new residential buildings permits, followed by dwellings of housing loans permits by 20 percent (35 permits) and apartments buildings by 14 percent (24 permits).

On the other hand, commercial buildings were found to be at the forefront of non-residential building permits with 48 percent (38 permits), followed by industrial buildings e.g., workshops and factories with 32 percent (25 permits), then government buildings with 14 percent (11 permits).

Regarding building completion certificates in June 2022, the data indicates that there is an overall decrease of 23 percent to 308 certificates in July 2022, compared to 399 registered in June 2022.

Most of the municipalities recorded a significant decrease in the number of certificates, most notably Al Khor (44 percent), Al Sheehaniya (43 percent), Doha (36 percent), Al Daayen (28 percent), Al Wakrah (26 percent), and Al Rayyan (18 percent), while the municipality of Umm Salal increased by (29 percent), while the municipality of the North did not witness any change.

According to their geographical distribution, Al Rayyan municipality came at the top of the municipalities where the number of building completion certificates issued was 73 certificates i.e. (24 percent ) of the total issued certificates, while the municipality of Al Wakrah came in second place with 66 certificates, i.e. (21 percent ), followed by municipality of Al Daayen with 58 certificates (19 percent ), then the municipality of Al Doha with 49 certificates (16 percent), the rest of the municipalities were Umm Slal 36 certificates 12 percent, Al Shammal 12 certificates 4 percent, Al Khor 10 certificates 3 percent and Al Sheehaniya 4 certificates 1 percent.

In terms of the type of certificates issued, data indicates that the new building completion certificates (residential and non-residential) constitute 84 percent (258 certificates) of the total building certificates issued during July 2022, while the percentage of additions certificates constituted 16 percent (50 certificates).

By analyzing new residential buildings completion certificates data, villas top the list, accounting for 65 percent (140 certificates) of all new residential buildings completion certificates, followed by dwellings of housing loans certificates by 25 percent (54 certificates), then apartments buildings by 8 percent (18 certificates).

On the other hand, commercial buildings were found to be at the forefront of non-residential building completion certificates with 67 percent (29 certificates), followed by industrial buildings e.g., workshops and factories with 16 percent (7 certificates), then mosques with 9 percent (4 certificates).

Building permits and completion certificate data are of particular importance as it is considered an indicator of the performance of the construction sector, which in turn occupies a significant position in the national economy.

The release of this monthly data comes under joint cooperation between the Planning and Statistics Authority and the Ministry of Municipality to make use of the existing electronic link between the two sides.
