DOHA: With the beginning of the new academic year, the Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has handed over 10 new schools and kindergartens to the Supreme Education Council (SEC).

The facilities were constructed at a cost of QR717m.

The schools are located in Doha, Al Asiri, New Doha, Madinat Khalifa North, Al Luqta, Al Gharrafa, Al Shahaniya, and Al Shamal while the kindergartens are located in Fereej Al Murra, Al Thumama, Rawdat Egdeim, Al Wajba, Al Duhail, Al Kharaitiyat and Umm Slal Ali.

The estimated total cost of the schools is about QR513m, and the kindergartens cost QR205m.

They include various modern facilities including IT laboratories, sports halls, activity halls, libraries and classrooms. The design is in line with the Qatari Code for people with special needs providing ramps at entrances and exits and special specifications for bathrooms, and others areas.

The design of these buildings also took into account the sustainability elements and “green buildings” requirements which include installation of systems and equipment that save energy and water.

Ashghal had announced last July the commencement of construction of 44 academic institutions covering different learning stages/academic levels with a total cost of about QR2bn. These contracts include the construction of 29 schools and 15 kindergartens in several places across the country. This project is set to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2014.
