Qatar takes part in Delhi legal forum

The Assistant Undersecretary of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Justice, Ibrahim bin Musa Al Hitmi, with other official at the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation meeting now under way in New Delhi, India.

New Delhi: The Assistant Undersecretary of Legal Affairs at the Ministry of Justice, Ibrahim bin Musa Al Hitmi,  has stressed the importance of upholding the principles of the rule of law at the 52nd meeting of the Asian-African Legal Consultative Organisation (AALCO) now under way here.

Al Hitmi is leading Qatar’s delegation at the meeting.

He stressed the  importance of tackling the challenges facing the organisation through upholding and consolidating the principles of the rule of law, respect for human rights, strengthening of transparency, integrity, anti-corruption, countering of extremism as well as promoting tolerance and dialogue among civilisations and enhancing the sustainable development and environmental protection.

Addressing the AALCO’s meeting Al Hitmi referred to the many important initiatives Qatar has made in these various areas  to reactivate and develop the organisation at the regional and international levels .

He reaffirmed Qatar’s commitment to the goals and values of the organisation which it seeks to achieve, adding that the Ministry of Justice in Qatar believes in the important role of the organisation in creating an ongoing dialogue among member states and between these states and international organisations such as the United Nations and other regional organisations to unify the visions and create mutual understanding and cooperation towards international legal issues of common interest.

He said this session coincides with the difficult conditions experienced by the international community due to the increasing hotbeds of tension and instability in a large number of regional states, in addition to the continued suffering of the Palestinian people, the growing Israeli settlements which is contrary to all the rules and norms of international law, the stalled Palestinian-Israeli peace process, the high level of poverty, marginalisation, unemployment, political instability  worsening economic and social development, desertification, scarcity of resources climate change in African and Asian countries .

Qatar joined the organisation in 1976. This membership stemmed from the interest in international law that governs relations between states. AALCC is the only organisation at the level of governments that specialises in international law and brings together the continents of Asia and Africa. It provides legal advice, research and studies which are considered a reference for the establishment of legal concepts that preserve the interests of its members. The AALCO is an international governmental organisation formed in 1956, initially to serve as an advisory board to member states on matters on international law.  QNA
