UPA hopes to pass food bill next week
New Delhi: With the first week of the monsoon session — which started August 5 — lost to disruptions, the government hopes to get the food security bill passed in parliament before August 15, informed sources said yesterday.
“We hope to pass the food bill before Aug 15,” said an official adding that the bill will be debated and passed in the Lok Sabha today. It will then be taken to the Rajya Sabha tomorrow or on Wednesday.
Once passed by both the houses, the bill, a pet legislation of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, will be sent to the president for his approval.
Since the bill was introduced in the lower house last week, Congress leaders have been appealing to all parties to pass the welfare legislation.
Delhi boy beaten to death by friends
New Delhi: A 16-year-old boy was beaten to death by three of his juvenile friends after he complained to an accused’s mother about their bid to extort money for smoking, police said yesterday.
Sandeep, a Class 9 student, was assaulted in Pandav Nagar in east Delhi Saturday night, police said. Sandeep, who suffered severe internal injuries, succumbed while being taken to hospital, police said.
All three attackers, residents of the same neighbourhood, were detained, police said.
Police said the accused used to extort money from young boys of the area for smoking.
They earlier demanded money from Sandeep and thrashed him but he refused to oblige them. On that day, Sandeep made a complaint to the mother of one of the accused. IANS
