Malé, Maldives: The Maldives said Thursday it is quitting the Commonwealth after years of wrangling over its human rights record since the toppling of its first democratically-elected leader four years ago.

"The decision to leave the Commonwealth was difficult, but inevitable," the foreign ministry said in a statement, adding that the country of 340,000 Muslims had been treated "unjustly and unfairly".
