DOHA: Qatar’s youth has joined forces to organise the ‘Run The World’ festival to engage youngsters from 15 to 26 years in a healthy way of life with the practice of sports. This is the only event put together “by the youth and for the youth in the region”, said the organisation, with approximately 60 people in charge.

The festival was launched yesterday with a fashion show titled ‘Inspiring Qatar’, featuring sportswear designed by young people from different schools and universities in Doha.

This event and the rest of the activities in the 10-day agenda for ‘Run The World’ were presented yesterday in a press briefing.

Diego Pinzon, director of The Youth Company, organiser of the event, together with Qatar Museums Authority, said that the mission of this initiative is to “empower and develop the youth.”

The first edition of this festival took place in 2011 with the participation of 10,000 people. “This year it begins with a fashion show featuring culturally accepted and comfortable outfits,” added Pinzon.

“It’s the largest event organised for the youth by the youth in the region,” he insisted.

All the events will be free of charge and are fully booked, but the organisation invited the public to come to the outdoor festival in Katara Beach, which will take place from December 20 to 22 and will include extreme sports demonstrations, sport tournaments, healthy activities and cultural performances.

Other events in the programme are the Sports Heroes Inspiring Youth at Aspire Dome today from 4pm to 7.30pm, the Medical Camp at Queen Medical (Villaggio) on December 16 from 2pm to 9pm, and the Comedy Show at The Torch Hotel on December 17 from 6.30pm to 10pm, among others.

Also at the press conference, Dr Christian Wacker, director of Qatar Olympic & Sports Museum, part of Qatar Museums Authority, encouraged young people to “think about the future and become valuable citizens to their country.”

Abdul Salam Issa Abu Issa, Deputy COO of Salam International, sponsor of the festival, commented that “Salam International is a firm believer of the future of Qatar in being a strong platform for youth development and empowerment and this festival is the beginning of our commitment in supporting the youth of Qatar as well as Qatar’s National vision 2030.”
