MANILA: President Benigno Aquino III yesterday said the government plans to hire 30,000 civilian employees in the next two years to fill in posts occupied by policemen who would be doing field work.
Aquino made the announcement in his speech at the 112th anniversary of Police Service at the Philippine National Police headquarters in Camp Crame, Quezon City.
According to Aquino, of the 146,085 police recorded in April, around 30,000 have administrative work. He added that this is far from the one to 500 police-to-population ratio in the field.
He said the plan, which is part of the PNP’s Operation Transformation Programme, will not only increase police visibility but also generate more jobs.
No ban on going to Iraq, Yemen
MANILA: The government is unlikely to suspend the deployment of Filipino workers to Iraq and Yemen despite the prevailing situation in the two Middle East countries.
Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) chief Hans Cacdac said the agency had not received any recommendation from the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for the reimposition of the deployment ban.
Cacdac said the POEA had opted to resume the deployment of Filipino workers to Iraq only after the DFA lowered the alert to 1. But the Philippines is still not deploying household service workers to Iraq and all types of workers to identified “no go zones” in Iraq.
8 cities cited for Apec meet
MANILA: The Philippine government has shortlisted eight cities and destinations as possible venues for high-level meetings when the Philippines hosts the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in 2015, an official said yesterday.
Foreign Undersecretary Laura del Rosario said the shortlisted sites, including Metro Manila and Clark, are under serious consideration. This list will be evaluated again to ensure their readiness to host the meetings.
Criteria for selection of venues include facilities and infrastructure, and availability of power, water and medical services.
