DOHA: Qatar has bagged two awards at the eleventh session of the Arab Towns Organization (ATO), officials said at a press conference yesterday.
ATO is the largest organisation of municipalities and towns of Arab countries, and it has announced 2013 awards for cities that took the innovative lead in environment, greening and landscaping and architecture.
The first prize for beautifying cities was won by municipality of Al Zahain and second prize for architecture was also awarded to Qatar. ATO awards have two categories of prizes. The architectural category includes project architecture and architectural heritage. And another category for green buildings and city beautification.
Rest of the prizes was given away to the United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Palestine and Jordan as well as Syria and Egypt through awards for city beautification.
According to the results announced yesterday in the architectural category Dubai city won the first prize.
The second prize was shared between Khartoum for the arena project Lebanon Heritage Village, and the Municipality of Zahain and market development project deserved Bahrain (Manama) third prize jointly with complex project Avenues in Kuwait.
ATO is a network which exists to develop cooperation between Arab cities in order to promote their development, while preserving their Arab identity, with its headquarters in Kuwait.
Mohamed Ahmed Al Sayed Director of Doha Municipality addressing press conference in Doha congratulated the winners.
“The number of nominations to for the competitions had increased this year, it has reached 54. Importance of winning this award is that it proves the standards of the city,” Al Sayed said.
