KUALA LUMPUR: US President Barack Obama will visit Malaysia in October to deliver the keynote address to an international entrepreneurship forum, organisers said yesterday.
The trip, which is yet to be officially confirmed by either government, would be the first to the Muslim-majority nation by a sitting US president since Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1966.
Obama will be in the region for a pair of summits in Bali and Brunei ahead of his October 11 address to the 4th Global Entrepreneurship Summit.
Chat app to be monitored
BANGKOK: Thai police have asked the operator of the popular “Line” instant messaging app for access to records of online chats, raising concerns about intrusive surveillance despite promising only suspected criminals would be targeted.
Technology Crime Suppression division chief Pisit Paoin said on Tuesday that police wanted to review the data of users they suspected were involved in crimes, including making statements against the Thai monarchy, arms trading, prostitution and drug dealing.
Suicide attempt by group of 10
BEIJING: A group of at least 10 people attempted suicide together in Beijing by drinking pesticide, local media reported yesterday.
Some of the group wore T-shirts reading “Harbin Railway Bureau”, the Beijing Youth Daily said, quoting a reporter. China’s railway ministry was abolished in March and absorbed into the transport ministry, leading to fears of job cuts.
