Islamabad: Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra arrived at Nur Khan Airbase, Pakistan, yesterday on a two-day visit to further promote ties. The Minister for Information Technology, Anusha Rehman, received her amid a 19-gun salute. The comes after more than a decade, at the invitation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif. Shinawatra is accompanied by a delegation of ministers, officials and businessmen. She will meet President Asif Ali Zardari and Sharif who will host a banquet in her honuor. One agreement and two memorandums of understanding are likely to be signed and Thai business delegation will hold separate meetings with their Pakistani counterpart. The first session of Pakistan-Thailand Joint Trade Committee will be held today.
Six die as bus turns turtle
Islamabad: Six people, including two women, died and 13 sustained injuries when a passenger bus overturned near Khairpur in the wee hours of yesterday, Geo News reported. Sources said the Karachi-bound bus from Punjab met with the accident when it reached Thari Mir Wah town’s area Sui Gas. Police said the overspeeding coach, packed to capacity, overturned after the driver lost control while negotiating a sharp turn. The injured were shifted to hospitals in Thari Mir Wah and Gambat.
Rains end water woes
ISLAMABAD: The monsoon has brought good news for the residents as officials monitoring the Rawal Dam dispelled fears of water shortages in the region for the rest of the year. Rawal Dam Sub-divisional Officer Bilal Rana said this year’s monsoon brought exceptionally heavy rain filling up the dam. “The maximum capacity of the dam is 37,000 cubic acres which has been attained this year and the water will cater to the needs of the residents for the rest of the year.” Last year the city did not receive enough rain which resulted in a severe water shortage, said Rana. “Every day, 24 million gallons of water is released to Water and Sanitation Agency which last year was reduced to three million a day due to water scarcity. Last year we did not open the spillways of the dam but we have done it thrice this year.” Agencies
