Doha: The Palestinian Ministry of Communications has issued, for the first time, five revenue stamps in different denominations, carrying the name State of Palestine and a picture of the Dome of the Rock.
The stamps were printed in Bahrain.
The new stamps, worth between $1 and $20, will be used in Palestine embassies, consulates, and representative offices abroad, as the Israeli government has refused to recognise any document that carries the name of State of Palestine.
The first Palestine postal office was established in 1840, during the Ottoman era, and the first postal exchange was between Palestine and Egypt in 1859.
In 1918, the Palestinian postal system came under the control of the British, and in 1920 new postal stamps carrying the name of Palestine were issued in three languages — Arabic, English and Hebrew.
In 1995, the postal system was taken over by the Palestinian Authority, and now there are 102 post offices in the Gaza Strip and Western Bank.
