DOHA: Top British scientists are coming to Qatar to take part in Café Scientifique series and the first Women in Science Day, Qatar UK 2013 and the British Council announced yesterday.

The series consists of public discussions with top scientists in a casual setting.

The three Café Scientifique lectures are ‘Stars under the Stars’ on Friday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at the Museum of Islamic Art Park Café; ‘Can We Reach the Stars?’ on November 1 from 6pm to 8pm at the MIA Café (indoors); and ‘A Passion for Observation: The Natural World and Science’ on November 8 from 6pm to 8pm at the Falcon Souq in Souq Waqif.

In ‘Stars under the Stars’, Dr Chris Lintott, astrophysicist from the University of Oxford, will discuss the place of Earth in the universe, and navigating the night sky with a focus on the discovery of exoplanets and orbiting stars other than the sun.

In ‘Can We Reach the Stars?’ Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock from Science Innovation Ltd will take her audience on a journey on the future of space exploration.

John Jackson, Science Policy Adviser at the Natural History Museum in London, will deliver ‘A Passion for Observation: the Natural World and Science’ lecture and discuss how curiosity is transformed into a passion to observe and how the innate curiosity becomes part of a shared participation in science.

He will present examples and ideas, focusing on birds and insects, exploring how this enriches our culture and strengthens public interest in and understanding of science.

On November 27, Qatar University marks the first ‘Women in Science Day’, bringing together female science experts from Qatar and the UK to celebrate their leadership and the importance of science in their lives. A panel discussion, which will be open to the public will be followed by workshops.

Martin Hope, Director of British Council Qatar, said: “The popular Café Scientifique series brings together Qatari and British enthusiasts and experts to talk, be curious and learn, furthering our mission to bridge cultures and engaging people.

“Set in open and friendly environments with discussion topics out of this world, I am looking forward to these talks and invite people in Qatar to join us,” Hope added. The Peninsula
