DOHA: Comforts and integrated facilities at labour accommodations such as those provided by Barwa Al Baraha workers’ city, have significantly improved efficiency and productivity of workers, say analysts from the real estate sector.
“With the establishment of labour accommodations complying with international standards and the government’s recent initiative to implement labour rights effectively, the condition of workers has improved remarkably,” Mana Al Mana, Chairman, Qatar Property Management Company, was quoted as saying by local Arabic daily Al Arab yesterday.
Al Mana said improved labour conditions are having a positive impact and Qatar is emerging as a better suitable labour market, attracting more foreign workers.
He said: “Qatar is committed to protecting and safeguarding the interests of workers and their rights as they are important partners in the country’s development. Without their support, it would be difficult to implement projects.”
Abdullah Hajji, Director, Barwa Al Baraha project, said the ongoing development of the integrated labour city in the Industrial Area is playing an important role in providing labour accommodations complying with international standards.
“At a time when the country is witnessing high demand for workers’ accommodation to house a large influx of foreign workers, Barwa Real Estate Company has been striving to shoulder some responsibility to ensure adequate supply of housing units for low-income workers by establishing projects such as Al Braha.”
Barwa is committed to building a strong society where different social categories live in harmony, achieved by removing social differences and raising standards of living for those with limited-income.
The concept of Barwa Al Baraha was born in 2008, as project designs suggested constructing workers accommodation and building the largest truck park in Qatar and the Middle East, to provide services for trucks and latest technologies in surveillance.
The integrated project is built over about 1.8 million sqm, with capacity to accommodate about 53,000 workers. It is being developed into two phases. Phase one has been completed and allotted to companies to house their limited-income workers.
The first phase also provides Qatar’s largest truck and vehicle parking space, with 4,200 spaces for trucks of different sizes.
The second phase will have around 32 buildings, each consisting of 130 rooms. Once completed, this package will accommodate nearly 24,000 workers, in addition to four dining halls, two playgrounds, two mosques, restaurants and utility shops.
