MANILA: The government said today that the 125,000-strong Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) should be insulated from politics.
Deputy Presidential Spokesperson Abigail Valte made the remarks amid rumours of uprising in the military as the Aquino administration is now being rocked by controversies on the Disbursement Acceleration Program (DAP), a stimulus package of the government to pump-prime the economy.
“We should not drag them because the military is for the country and for the people. We should not engage in any efforts to politicize the military,” she said in a news briefing in Malacanang, the presidential palace.
Valte also expressed confidence that there was no movement from the military to oust President Benigno S Aquino III, who is facing at least three impeachment complaints before the House of Representatives.
Two of the impeachment raps were related to the DAP, whose parts were declared as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, and one was in connection to the Enhanced Defence Cooperation Agreement between the Philippines and the United States.
