ISLAMABAD: Top-level appointments in Pakistani government organisations by the PML-N government during the last one year have become scandalously controversial, as it has now approached the apex court for a belated review of a June 12, 2013 judgment in the Khwaja Asif case for merit-based appointments.
Serious questions about the validity of the entire appointment procedure adopted by the government so far have been raised, as neither the June 12, 2013 ruling has been implemented in letter and spirit nor has the commission constituted by the regime to make the merit-based appointments been allowed to do its job.
The June 12, 2013 judgment was seen as a great success by the N-Leaguers, as it was focused on the controversial appointments made by the caretaker government. And now after a lapse of over one year, the Nawaz government finds holes in the judgment and wants a belated review.
However, the catch is that by now the government has already made several key appointments without following the SC’s ruling or involving the commission made by the PML-N government itself under the apex court’s order.
The attorney general on Thursday requested the Supreme Court to revisit the June 12 order, arguing that it was obstructing the government’s ability to make future appointments. However, the SC decided to set up a five-member bench to see if such a review was possible after over one year.
