MANILA: One civilian was killed and another was hurt after communist rebels staged a landmine attack in Davao City on Monday, the military said.

Cpt Raul Villegas, spokesman of the Army’s 10th division, said members of the New People’s Army (NPA) ambushed a team from a civilian volunteer organisation in Paquibato District around 9am.

The volunteers were reportedly on their way to Sitio Butay when the insurgents detonated a landmine.

Villegas said a certain Onded Ambuas died when shrapnel hit his back while a certain Julian Mandacawan sustained wounds on his head.

Seair flight take-off probed

MANILA: The Kalibo International Airport in Aklan was temporarily closed yesterday after a Singapore-bound Seair plane overshot the runway while preparing for take-off.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) ordered an investigation of the incident, which resulted in the shutdown of airport operations for four hours. Airport manager Percy Malonesio said the passengers were safe as they were immediately helped off Seair flight DG 8802 to the terminal.

John Andrews, Deputy Director General of CAAP, dispatched an Aircraft Accident Investigation and Inquiry Board team to Kalibo to investigate the incident, which occurred at about 8am.

Tight security in Abra town

LA TRINIDAD: Security operations were beefed up in Dolores town in Abra after Friday night’s shooting carnage that killed a former vice mayor, his cop-brother and another villager.

Pre-empting any spill over at the wake in Sitio Balneg, Barangay Poblacion, a platoon from the Philippine Army’s 503rd Brigade stepped in to avert any escalation of hostilities while emotions are still high, said Dolores Mayor Roberto Seares Jr.

Friday’s shooting rampage left three people killed, officials said.
