New York: Chris Archer pitched a two-hitter and the Tampa Bay Rays continued their tear with a 1-0 victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.

Archer retired the first 10 Yankees before Ichiro Suzuki reached on an error by third baseman Evan Longoria.

Kelly Johnson hit an RBI single in the sixth for the Rays, who are 21-3 in their last 24 games and remained ahead of Boston in the AL East.

New York was blanked for the ninth time this season while losing for the 11th time in 17 games since starting July with a six-game winning streak.

The Yankees are a season-high eight games out of first place.

Elsewhere, Max Scherzer advanced to a 15-1 record with six innings of one-hit ball on his 29th birthday, and Miguel Cabrera marked his return to the lineup with a home run and three RBIs to power the Detroit Tigers to a 10-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Scherzer gave up a booming two-out double to center in the second inning, but that was the only baserunner he allowed as he retired the final 13 batters he faced sending Philly to a seventh straight defeat.

Jered Weaver began the 2012 season 15-1 for the Los Angeles Angels, Ubaldo Jimenez had the same record in 2010 for Colorado and Roger Clemens was likewise for the 2001 New York Yankees. REUTERS
