DOHA: Qatar Mobility Innovations Centre (QMIC) hosted the first meeting of the Salamtek Consortium where members reviewed progress made by the centre in having solutions ready for national deployment.
They also discussed marketing activities and reward mechanisms to promote the use of Salamtek solutions.
Vodafone Qatar became the sixth member of the consortium.
In support of its initiative to tackle the distracted driving problem caused by mobile phones, QMIC, in November 2014, formed the consortium which includes the Ministry of Municipality and Urban Planning, the Traffic Directorate of the Ministry of Interior, Ooredoo Qatar, Qatar Insurance Company, Vodafone Qatar, and Road Safety Studies Centre at Qatar University.
The consortium will ensure coordinated national efforts to speed up the development of innovative solutions and come up with mechanisms for their deployment in the market.
“The strong consortium made up of key national organisations from diverse fields will effectively promote the development, deployment and user adoption of solutions that can limit phone usage while driving,” said Abdulaziz Al Khal, Deputy Executive Director and CEO, QMIC.
“We are privileged to work with these entities to ensure a coordinated effort to apply strategies for creating the largest impact possible on reducing distracted driving.  The meeting discussed QMIC’s progress in solutions and next steps,” Al Khal added.
Salamtek solutions and applications focus on managing driver distraction in a user-friendly manner. Solutions will seamlessly change phone behaviour above certain speeds, eliminating distracting elements caused by mobile phone. The use of mobile phones while driving is one of the main causes of distracted driving.
