Doha: A UN special rapporteur on human rights will visit Qatar to evaluate the state of migrants workers, the UN Human Rights Council said in a release yesterday.
During his eight-day visit, Francois Crepeau will meet officials, representatives of major manpower sending countries, civil society members and workers. He will also visit a prison and a migrant detention centre.
Crepeau, who is arriving on November 3, will share the preliminary findings at a press conference on November 10 at the UN Human Rights Training and Documentation Centre for South West Asia and the Arab Region in West Bay.
Qatar has one of the highest ratios of migrants to citizens in the world, Crepeau said. “Quite uniquely, about 88 percent of the population is foreign nationals in this destination state for migrants, who are employed mainly in construction, services and domestic work.”
He will present the report to the Council in June 2014.
