PESHAWAR: A remote-con trolled bomb exploded near a mosque in northwestern Pakistan yesterday, killing a four-year-old girl and wounding three others, an official said.
The bomb was planted beside the outer wall of the mosque in Landi Kotal town in the Khyber tribal region, local administration chief Shakeel Burki said.
“The blast killed a four-year-old girl and wounded three others, one of them seriously,” he said.
No one has claimed responsibility of the blast which came a day after a bomb placed in a mosque in a densely populated neighbourhood of Peshawar went off during afternoon prayers, killing six people. Peshawar is vulnerable to bomb blasts and Taliban attacks as it runs into the semi-autonomous tribal belt, considered a safe haven for Taliban, Al-Qaeda and other insurgents fighting both in Pakistan and across the border in Afghanistan.
Pakistan is in the grip of violence including bomb attacks, which has raised questions over security as the country prepares for a general election expected in May.
US drone strike kills militant in Waziristan
MIRANSHAH, Pakistan: A US drone strike yesterday killed at least one militant riding on horseback in a mountainous area of Pakistan’s northwestern tribal belt, security officials said.
The missile attack, the first by an unmanned American drone in Pakistan for at least a month, came in Dehgan village, 30km west of Miranshah, the main town in lawless North Waziristan.
North Waziristan is one of seven tribal districts on the rugged border with Afghanistan which are a haven for Taliban and Al Qaeda-linked militants.
“A US drone fired one missile, killing a militant travelling on horseback,” a security official said.
Local intelligence officials said the drones fired two missiles killing two militants. Security officials in northwestern city of Peshawar said the man was believed to be a “foreign national” — a term officials use to describe Al Qaeda linked militants.AFP
